The novel, A Long Walk to Water, will allow students to realize what the life of refugees is. Students will get a better understanding of what is currently going on in other countries and why there is an increased amount of people seeking refuge and safety. Along with the novel, students will read and analyze age appropriate expository texts, pictures, and TED talks.
Students will gain the following skills: perspective, point of view, bias, and argumentative writing. At the end of the unit students will write an argumentative essay: what are factors leading to survival or what are society’s responsibilities to refugees?
