The Foundational Skills ELA 1.3a-g standards impact all of the other first-grade ELA standards. Through the acquisition of word analysis skills, learners attain reading proficiency. All primary students, especially first graders, will benefit from explicit phonics instruction. Without a firm understanding of word decoding, it is impossible for students to master comprehension, fluency, or writing.
The materials requested in this project will be used to attain these crucial phonics foundational skills. It is important to use engaging materials that are easy to differentiate instruction for students of varying academic abilities within the same classroom. The headphones requested will be used for students to access a district purchased program that specifically targets phonics skills at each student's level in an engaging, high-interest format. The other materials will be used to differentiate instruction during teacher-directed small group instruction and independent workstations. All materials were specifically chosen for the ease of tailoring each student's needs in order for them to become a better reader.
