The listening center and the books on CD is going to support language development in my classroom. Listening is essential to develop new vocabulary and more sophisticated language patterns and sentence structures.
Second language learners need additional opportunities to support their oral language development. My students will use the listening center in groups of four during my Guided Reading block. They will listen to the books and orally answer simple questions about the books. They will also draw/write about what they heard.
I also have different reading levels in my classroom. The listening center will also allow me to differentiate for the various reading levels I have in my classroom. The listening center will also benefit my students by introducing them to new topics and open new worlds to them, thereby enticing them to locate and read more about a topic.
The books on CD and the listening center will also help my kindergarten students to recognize common types of texts such as storybooks, poems, fantasy and realistic text.
