Our classroom is equipped with bulky middle school desks, which make it difficult to move around for students to collaborate comfortably. I have witnessed my students stand at each other's desks as they work cooperatively. Other times they just simply take their work to the cold tile.
Flexible seating will allow my students to empower their learning by choosing the most comfortable position to learn complete their work. During independent work my students choose who they want to work with and attempt to move their desks around to form a flexible group. They create chaos as they move the desks around. Having Wobble chairs, which are easier to move around, would help my students maximize their productivity. I have a student who often gets out of his seat and does 10 jumping jacks in order to concentrate in his work; a Wobble chair would help him a great deal! I have another one who wiggles nonstop as she completes her math work. Many other students choose to open the door and take their learning to the outside hallway. This is one way the mats will come in handy.
