Many of my young students struggle with focusing, staying on task and sticking with a challenging task and often get aggressive when frustrated. They have not learned appropriate ways to calm themselves or work through a challenge. By using daily puzzle time we use a positive, fun activity that allows the children to explore ways of problem solving, asking for helping and sticking with a task. This helps to increase reading and math skills.A variety of puzzle piece mounts and difficulty levels allows an individual approach to this and ensures that each kid's unique need is addressed. The multi-sensory activity focuses their extremely active bodies and minds and helps them practice vital emotional regulation skills.
They LOVE puzzle time but our supply is limited and in poor condition. They are so proud when they stick with the task and complete it with grit and determination; especially when they convince themselves on the first day they can't do it and throw the pieces in frustration! But each day more progress is made and more skills are learned, as they build up confidence and see that they can succeed. They soon start to apply these newly learned emotional regulation skills to other more challenging situations they face.
