Students in two 5th grade classrooms will be better prepared for the rigors of middle school, for the kind of reading in which they will be engaged as they grow into adults as they read more and more non-fiction. Our reading program asks each student to read non-fiction independently, but at present we don't have enough books in our literacy classroom for each student to simultaneously have a book.
Students are hungry to read, learn and understand.
Teaching literacy to two 5th grade classes, the request is for one book per student. The requested books cover a variety of topics at three reading levels to engage all minds and broaden
understandings of the world around them, of history, of how things work, of the issues we face and have faced in our communities. When students have met the world around them in books, they are better able to make a difference as they begin to define themselves and engage in the world.
