When students are given extrinsic motivation factors, they are more apt to follow the rules. Eventually, these extrinsic motivation factors turn into intrinsic factors. The students will no longer need tangible things to make them behave. Because I counsel students from PreK-5th grade, and because they come from different backgrounds, some of them need incentives such as large smiley face pins. These pins will be an incentive for them to become self-motivated. They will be able to wear them with pride for all of their peers to see. When others see the joy they receive from wearing these pins, it may also motivate them to behave in order to earn their own pin.
