My personal laptop decided to die at the tail end of the summer. For the start of the school year, I have been using a district-provided Chromebook in order to teach my classes. With my current Chromebook, I am limited in the resources I can create and I am seeking more engagement from my students.
An iPad will allow me to create more interactive content and videos that will allow my students to access the information taught in class at all times--with iMovie. Having the keyboard will allow me to use the iPad in place of the laptop that I am currently missing, and the pen feature will allow me to jot down quick notes (such as take attendance, give myself reminders, and take notes on the behavioral progress of my students). It will also allow me to continue my journey of bringing more artistic expression into my classroom. We often forget that drawing is a KEY part of the writing process for many students who think like burgeoning artists in classrooms within districts that are de-funding arts programs. As a teacher on the journey to gaining an Arts Integration Specialty, I am still brainstorming ways to get my students to create and see themselves as artists and makers.
My school is an alternative school. We are consistently trying out new approaches to engage our students because their lives truly depend on them choosing to make better decisions. This requires me to have one-on-one and small group sessions with my students during their writing process in order to get students from different grades and skillsets on the same page. Having a device that will allow me to reach my students more efficiently will assist me in providing more students with the specialized assistance they need.
