We are hoping to purchase 10 hands on fraction bar sets. This will allow us to have 5 at each table to utilize in our intensive interventions. Studies show that the best indicator of how a student will do in high school math is their ability to understand fractions. We realize that it takes a strong number sense to truly understand fractions and why they work the way the do. We hope to use these fraction bar sets to allow the students to develop a deeper number sense and understanding of fractions.
With these color-coded tiles, students can manipulate parts of a whole to see how they relate to each other. They will also use the tiles to perform simple math operations with fractions, decimals, and percentages. Denominations include 1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/8, 1/10, and 1/12. Each set contains 51 plastic tiles in a sturdy plastic storage tray and an activity guide.
These kids come from low-income homes where the educational support may be lacking. The opportunity to develop a strong understanding of fractions will carry with them through high school and beyond. Help improve the math aptitude in our classroom, school, and community!
