In an elementary school where we use lots of project-based learning, and whole-class discussions, comfortable seating is a must. It is easiest to gather on the floor, but uncomfortable to do so when that floor is linoleum. Having anti-fatigue mats, and comfortable bean bags for reading in our classroom will help students feel more comfortable during whole-group times of our day, and during independent reading. As a classroom focused on community and learning together, we spend a lot of time sitting together to learn! When students are comfortable they are able to pay attention to mini-lessons, read alouds, and participate in partner discussions. The addition of these mats and bean bags, will improve the overall attitude of our classroom, and hopefully health, since they will be easier to clean!
