We have an extra classroom within our school that we are attempting to make a calming room that would benefit our students with Autism and intellectual disabilities with sensory processing difficulties. A student may be hypo or hyper sensitive and may need strategies that assist them by reducing or adding additional stimuli. A calming room may greatly assist these children in being able to participate, interact and engage better during the school day during instructional and social settings. Within this room, we hope to be able to offer various items and/or activities that offer input to all sensory domains. We have developed a plan to separate the room to incorporate areas in which each of these sensory needs can be met but we are in a great need of donations to be able to accomplish this. The different areas include visual, tactile, movement, olfactory and calming. Any donations will be greatly appreciated.
