Criss-Cross, applesauce has its time and place, but my young, energetic class needs to move, shake, touch and explore to make literacy come alive. My class is singing about initial sounds, dancing to color word songs, snapping sounds, and clapping words, but we are in desperate need of some actual hands-on activities that will allow them to manipulate the letters and form words so they can build up their knowledge and confidence and become stellar readers and writers. With your help, they can wear the letters and form living, breathing words the whole class can read. They can (pretend to) eat the alphabet, as they learn sounds and form C-V-C words with the alphabet cookies and string sweet treat letters together. Can you just picture how fun that will be for them? They can fish letters out of the water, squish or toss bean bag letters as they build word knowledge and expand their vocabulary. They can get dressy with the vests, or messy with the letter stampers. Most importantly, they'll understand just how fun and engaging literacy can be. With your help, my little friends will be invested in becoming lifelong learners from the very start!
