Exciting, inviting, inspiring-Three words that represent the environment I want for my enthusiastic and highly-motivated 1st graders. I am a bilingual teacher at a public school in the southwest side of Chicago looking to make a difference in each of my students' lives. Although they are from the same neighborhood, each brings his own story to tell. At only 6 years of age, some already know what the sorrow of losing a parent feels like! My goal is to have them forget their troubles as soon as they step into my classroom. I want to accomplish this through inter-disciplinary art: a fusion between art and the core subjects. I would love for my little "luchadores" (our classroom theme :-)) to have books to read about people who have similar struggles and who look like them! I want them to have access to art materials to express their ideas and start to find their identities through art and literature.
