Although we want all of our students to acclimate to our school and to the United States, it is also important that they preserve their identity and remain proud of who they are and where they are from. Having physical maps available makes it easier for them to share this information with fellow students as well as staff.
Having maps visible around the building also shows the importance honoring our history and our world. I firmly believe that these maps will help our students with their self confidence as well as open their eyes to the enormity of our world.
My hope is that when students mark their countries of origin, they will better understand how similar they are. I also want them to feel good about sharing their family's immigration stories, and having maps will help them do that as well. Seeing the world, the enormity of it, and the great distances that they may have covered to get here, will show them the strength that they and their families have.
