My students come from difficult and stressful home lives. School is their safe space where they not only learn how to succeed academically but they develop skills to help regulate their emotions and cope with the stresses of daily life. We often use our 5 senses as a mean of developing coping, these sensory items will be an effective tool as they explore new ways to cope and self-soothe. The books I have selected will help my students in identifying their feelings. They experience a roller coaster of emotions on a daily basis due to the stressful nature of their home lives. Being able to identify a feeling is the first step towards coping with that emotion in a healthy way. It is my plan to use these supplies to build the feelings vocabulary of my students and then identify their best means of coping.
