Having low income students mean that a lot of them don't get a chance to read at home. Not only do they not get a chance to read at home, but many of these students don't have parents who are home at night to read to them or even read to them in English. Many of my student's first language is Spanish. Having my students do a book study on Bridge to Terabithia allows them to show empathy, draw conclusions, make connections from their life to the story or vice versa. They will be able to hear how an adult or educator fluently reads so that they can do the same process later in life.
