My goal is to supply the students with classroom materials that will help close the learning gap and increase self-confidence and independence for all learners, especially in reading and math.
We lack a reading center in the classroom. This is crucial for developing readers to hear the words modeled for them to carry over what they have learned into their daily reading practice. The boom box will be used, along with book sets and CD's, to improve reading skills. Students at the listening center will actively follow along as the story is read to them. This helps the students feel more independent in their learning versus the teacher always reading to them. A listening center, with print rich reading materials, will help support my below level readers.
During reading centers, The Storyteller Writing Box will be used for students to develop their own stories with guidance from prompts on the cards. This will be used to enhance students' vocabulary skills and identifying elements of a story. Sight word games and roll and read phonics games will be used in centers to boost students' retention of previously learned words that they have difficulty remembering. Playing reading and phonics games will help promote recall of words through visually stimulating word cards and repetition of tasks.
During math, the games can be used to help promote critical thinking skills in a fun way. My students are not fluent in adding and subtracting basic math facts within 20. This is a skill all students in second grade need to master by the end of the year. Fun math manipulatives, such as Pop-and-Add to 20 or Subtraction and Addition Towers, will enhance students' critical thinking skills during math centers.
