A child with autism typically has severe speech and language disabilities. Undesired behaviors such as screaming, hitting, crying and self injury typically decrease with the use of an effective, immediate, universal means of communication.
The iPads and the software available with apps will provide a universal means of communication. The communication books they now carry have picture icons often times becoming lost or destroyed. Replacing icons takes a lot of time and resources delaying the ability of the student to tell us what they need or want.
The use of electronic and or picture icons have been effective with developing oral communication skills. The families of my students become ecstatic when their son or daughter are finally able to tell them what they want or how they feel. They no longer have to play 20 questions or see their child tantrum due to their inability to express themselves effectively.
