My students have severe learning disabilities which cause them to have difficulty feeling successful in the general education classroom. They process things differently and require a multi-sensory teaching approach. I am able to work with them for specific portions of the day, but for much of the day they are working without support beyond what the general education classroom teachers are able to provide. Having tools such as ipads, headphones, colored overlays, and slant boards allows them to feel more independent and receive information in ways that they are able process more effectively.
For example, I have a student that only began to speak when he was four years old. He is now in kindergarten in a general education classroom struggling in every minute of his day. The classroom teacher is doing her best to assist him but with eighteen students, having one on one instruction time is extremely challenging. He is able to practice creating letters, making sounds, finding patterns, and other valuable lessons by himself when he has an ipad available, and participates with his full attention.
I also have students in a second grade classroom that are working on a kindergarten grade level. They receive specific instruction in small groups, as well as differentiated instruction, but there are many times when they could practice simple strategies and skills at their desks using an ipad. This would not only assist their success, but allow them to feel less different, because they would not have to get up and go to a computer while all the other students are at their desks.
All of my students process things at a significantly delayed rate. The accommodations such as colored overlays, highlighters, and slant boards, finger pointers allow these children to see reading material with more clarity.
