Learning how to socialize, cooperate and play are important aspects of kindergarten; however, learning the fundamentals in reading, writing and math are important aspects of kindergarten too. Worksheets and manipulatives have their place in school, but research shows that a tool, such as a rekenrek, can help children develop more advanced strategies by building number sense. A rekenrek allows a child to have a visual picture of an amount. Also, since 10 plays such an important role in our number system, and two fives make up ten, students can actually see how numbers relate to fives and tens. Lastly, young children are very tactile, being able to touch the beads and being an active participant in a math lesson, helps increase a child's focus and knowledge.
