Many students today do not have the coping skills to deal with the array of emotions they are faced with. Far too often, many of these emotions are a result of trauma faced as young children, whether it is recognized or not. This stress impairs attention, emotion, and readiness to learn within the school.
I will be holding mindfulness groups with students this year in order to teach students strategies on how to deal with their daily stresses, specifically when they are not in the moment experiencing the stress.
Among other things, I will be working with students about how to sit, listen, and breath mindfully, as well as practice these skills during each group meeting. The Seat of Your Soul Zabuton Meditaton Cushions will allow my students to have comfortable seating as they practice these strategies, rather than sitting on the carpeted floor.
As they practice these skills regularly over the 8-week group session, the hope is that they will be able to take this practice into their daily lives when daily stresses arise.
