In previous years I had a classroom that was "inside" the school. I would use the outside garden areas as a learning station on a daily basis. The last few years I have been in a room that is on the exterior of our building or the dreaded "front ramp". Until now, our sidewalk area was a high traffic area and not safe for us to use as an outdoor learning station. The district recently installed security fencing and now my front door no longer opens up to a parking lot! I have a large space right outside my door that will fit a table with benches within my view. The other table will be underneath my large window to share with our neighboring Kindergarten class.
I forgot how much kids love the outdoors and love to learn from their surroundings. We took our journals outside last week, sat on the sidewalk, and used our five senses. The kids were engaged, they were working together, and best of all they weren't stuck at a desk.
I want to provide an outdoor learning area for my kids. I want them to appreciate and respect our one and only planet Earth. It will also provide a little extra reading space and a quiet area to work in small groups with parent volunteers. The tables and benches will be protected from the elements so I plan on these lasting for many years to come!
