Most of my students experience great barriers to learning do to various disabling conditions from autism to Down's syndrome. They often have problems communicating, difficulties properly expressing their emotions, decreased attention to academic tasks, and delayed sensory-motor development. As we all know, technology often provides a way to overcome many of these barriers.
As occupational therapists, we have training in many wonderful education based apps that aim to help bridge the gap between a students potential and what they are able to express due to the limitations of their mental or physical challenges. Many of my students have difficulty with handwriting. Using the iPad gives them a new way to practice and learn their letter formation. There are many apps that help with daily routine activities such as getting dressed, brushing teeth, and food preparation. These are all areas that my students struggle with.
By providing my students access to these apps you will be helping them not only achieve academic success, but social and emotional success as well. As they experience a decrease in the barriers that are blocking them from achieving success, their self-esteem and sense of empowerment will soar!
