We utilize technology everyday in our classroom. Not only can our students relate to the medium, children with autism respond positively to the interactive nature and constant visual support technology can provide. We will use the iPads as part of our day-to-day instruction in both small group and as an enhancement to one-on-one lessons. Children will use the technology to build language, comprehension, reading fluency, mathematical understandings and visual memory/perception, just to name a few!
We utilize technology in conjunction with hands-on practice and other more traditional means of learning, but when making use of applications and websites that scaffold learning and enhance concepts taught, it's amazing how much progress can be made.
The best part? Seeing the confidence of a student who previously believed they couldn't solve an addition problem or create a sentence using the technology to do so and then having the opportunity to celebrate their success!
