When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence.鈥 - Ansel Adams By creating the possibilities for my students to learn through a visual medium, my students can explore their own self-expression and relate it back into their own lives and education. With our own cameras and lenses in hand, we can reinforce the skills we learn; we can incorporate photography and film into all our projects. Cameras in the Classroom is a comprehensive, yearlong program throughout classrooms across San Diego County. Students integrate English Language Arts (ELA) with photography and film, through dynamic projects, exploring the novels they read in ELA and connecting it to visual media. Our curriculum is aligned with Common Core and California state education standards (Visual and Performing Arts, Media, and Language), to maximize the impact of our classes on student learning. Our approach is based on the application of Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), a proven learning methodology developed by cognitive psychologist Abigail Housen and museum educator Philip Yenawine, that has been used in schools, museums and other institutions worldwide for more than 15 years. Beyond developing students' understanding and appreciation of the arts, VTS builds critical thinking, communication, observation, problem solving, reasoning and literacy skills. Finally, our program culminates in an exhibition, where students can have the self-esteem and confidence-boosting experience of presenting their work to teachers, family members and friends.
