In my Special Education Integrated classroom, I believe incorporating alternative seating and "brain breaks" are essential in fostering the best learning environment for my students. I have several types of seating which my students may utilize during instruction or during independent/group work. This helps in allowing them to feel comfortable in our classroom, which I believe encourages their learning and helps inspire their motivation and drive to learn. "Brain breaks" are an everyday occurrence in my classroom, and are derived from our school-wide social/emotional curriculum MindUp.
"Educating the mind, without educating the heart, is no education at all" -AristotIe. I strongly believe that in order to teach, we must teach the whole child, as this quote by Aristotle expresses. In making my students physically and emotionally comfortable, my hopes are to foster a strong classroom ohana.
The large "leaf" area rug will be placed at the front of my room where I teach whole group math and language arts lessons. I have them sit here instead of being seated at their desks all day. This is also where I read aloud books to my students and allow them to lay down and close their eyes in order create a "movie in their head." My hopes are that this helps foster my students' love of reading. The smaller rug will be placed in "The Beach" area of my room. This is a place where students can ask to go take a "brain break" when they are having difficulty focusing on classwork. There are other tools in our "Beach" in which students may utilize as sensory breaks. The ocean theme of this rug will go perfectly with our theme of "The Beach."
