I teach 10th grade English and Introduction to Philosophy at the California School of the Arts - San Gabriel Valley. For my class, we focus on developing our writing, argumentation, and innovative problem solving skills. We currently have school-provided laptops, however the need for physical textbooks is still an on-going requirement. With a variety of reading materials and source materials, my students are able to flex their intellectual muscles even more.
My goal is teach my students that understanding an argument's central claim is not the same as agreeing with it. Too often, our society is presented in a polarizing manner that pits different viewpoints against each other, all while the various sides do not actually understand the opposing view. I try to break down this barrier and create a space where the echo chamber is dismantled, and an open exchange of ideas is established.
