If fully funded, my students will be able to use these materials to build sight words, CVC and CVCe words, as well as vowel and consonant blends. The students will work collaboratively in small groups to build the designated words and then practice sounding them out and blending them together. I believe this skill is the foundation for being a good reader and consequently a life-long learner.
One area my students struggle with the most is blending sounds together to form words. Being unable to blend letter sounds together when reading, especially, is nerve-wracking to them and they lose confidence and start wanting to give up.
In my classroom, we practice blending, segmenting and building words on a daily basis. Students build the word(s), say the word(s) and then write the words. This help them gain the confidence they need to be successful. The materials requested will be an essential part of their daily drills.
The materials will be used during small groups and RTI (response to intervention) to help students build and sound out designated words. They will work collaboratively with peers in groups to help each other reach a common goal of being able to build a multitude of words they need to know in first grade.
The CVC Word Work Center will help not only beginners but also students who want to challenge themselves. Beginners can build each word by matching letter to letter whereas students who want a challenge can flip the cards over to spell each word on their own! Stack & Build Phonics Flip Books will help students with short and long vowels, blends and digraphs. The Classroom Magnetic Letters Kit will allow the students to make their own words and sound them out, as well as help with alphabet practice.
