Our 8th annual poetry recitation competition teaches students to master spoken language and develop an appreciation for poetry recitation as an art form. It enriches students because they work on public speaking, understanding texts, grasping the holistic nature of language, and developing emotional intelligence. It also fosters community support by bringing students, staff, families, and community members together in a unique way. All 750 students at the school are allowed to try-out for this contest, and 5 spots are awarded per grade level for the school-wide contest. This event is completely free for students to participate in and attend. We usually draw an audience of over 100 people. The t-shirts are a fun way to reward and recognize students for the countless hours they spend memorizing, practicing, and finally reciting their poems on the big stage. Students can show off their individual achievement and school pride when they wear their contest t-shirts. Patriot Poetry night has evolved into a cultural staple at our school as it draws a diverse crowd of participants and many returning students as they move up in grade level. Beyond gaining valuable speaking skills, students are able to engage in this event by volunteering and attending. It truly is a community event where young people are the stars for the night, make memories that will last a lifetime, and are a part of something they can be proud of whether it was attending, volunteering, or performing.
