Purpose: The educational purpose of my proposal is to populate my classroom with reading materials that are on the guided reading levels of my students. I believe that this in turn, will help them to feel successful in reading, and make them want to read. Research shows that a diverse collection of books in the classroom motivates students to become more successful readers.
Description: I plan to incorporate the books that I am able to purchase with this grant into our daily routine in the classroom. In using the Guided reading information, we are able to better pinpoint the levels in which the students are reading. At this point, I have leveled all of the books that I have and placed them into levels boxes around my room, however, my library is not as big as I would like, especially for the lower levels of books. Students will be able to take these books and place them in their seat pockets to read, but will also have the opportunity to take these books home to share with their parents. I plan to make students responsible for completing a book review for the books that they read. With this, I hope to help them to be better able to use the text to find answers and also help them to understand they are responsible for what they read. In addition, it will help their parents to read more with them and to understand their level of reading. I think that having them take pride in being able to read the material they are taking home will make them more motivated to read . I also feel that in doing this they will be able to engage in more reading.
