The goal of this project is to allow my students to engage deeply in our grade-level novel study by providing them with their own individual physical copy of the text at home. It has been my experience that 5th grade scholars benefit greatly when they have access to a physical copy of literary material, and I anticipate that they will be able to interact more closely with the text when it is in their hands and not just on a screen. During distance learning, this is more important now than ever.
Engaging with this text is one component of the 5th grade academic integrated literacy studies that connect meaningful and relevant stories with social studies and science topics, and the real-world experiences of students and families.
My students began the year learning about the history of voting rights and then proposing their own campaigns to build a more fair voting system in the United States. Now we will continue learning about the human rights issues through stories and investigations of water, access to water, and its necessity for human survival. As we do so, students will continue to be advocates for change and human rights. This book is one of the stories that we analyze with a critical literacy lens. 5th grade scholars will become literary analysts, tasked with making connections, observations, and analyzing and discussing theme.
These 5th grade scholars will have a better opportunity to engage in deep and meaningful learning if they have access to their own physical copy of the text while we explore and unpack it from multiple perspectives. Having this opportunity will elevate and extend their learning as they connect it to their past and future learning endeavors this year and beyond.
