I use a reading workshop approach for my 7th graders in which students can read whatever books they choose. At the end of the year, we discuss what it was like to "walk a mile" in their main characters' shoes and what they learned about empathy from it.
My students need high-interest, diverse books that will help them experience the world outside their town and develop empathy for people who are different than they are. Studies show that a strong classroom library is essential in creating readers of our students. My students are more likely to be excited about reading if they have new, high-interest, diverse books right at their fingertips in my classroom. I love it when I book talk new and notable books, and students argue over who gets to read it first.
