In groups of three, students will build kits to make solar cars to explore sixth grade science concepts. They will collect data and explore experimental design while building these projects. They will also study weather by using weather station instruments such as weather vanes, anemometers and barometers. Students will work collaboratively and learn teamwork. This mimics the real world of work, where engineers and office workers collaborate together to accomplish a goal. The project activities will provide students with ample opportunities for critical thinking as they build the solar cars. Students will also explore friction- sliding and rolling as it relates to the car. Students will practice the process of building a prototype- and modifying it after preliminary tests, which is what engineers do when designing new products. Lastly, students will create reports that show what they learned while building each car as well as researching cars of the future. Students will listen to a guest speaker from NOAA and have data on the weather that they collected at school using the instruments. By using hands-on project based learning, student engagement will increase.
