Research shows that children that are physically active improve their overall health. Healthier children have lower rates of absenteeism, tend to be more alert and focused in class, and demonstrate improved overall academic performance. Unfortunately, many of our children do not get the opportunity to be active outside of the school day. Recess presents one of the few times in the week when they can get the much needed movement and exercise. With childhood obesity on the rise, autism rates climbing and opportunities for sports activities falling in the inner city, we hope to improve the overall fitness of our students!
I plan on placing all the new recess equipment in areas where there is plenty of space but no equipment. I want to set up basketball hoops in one area and soccer goals in another. I want to create an area on the playground where I can teach different jump roping skills. I want to create an area for social interaction games like sidewalk chalk and bean bag toss.
