My students are the ones who struggle daily with reading. They have either gone undetected, misunderstood, or just so shy that they hide under their books, pretending to read. They are the students who are too embarrassed to ask for help in class because they fear that they will be laughed at. I do my best to empower my students, to make them believe in their abilities, rather than retreat to their inabilities.
I need to support my students in the best ways that I can within the resources given to me; but I need to do more, I need to give them the opportunities that suburban districts have, they need to compete, and learn with 21st Century Skills and Technology! What my students need is to be engaged with multiple modes of learning. I don't have an IWB/Promethean board, or a projector to display my work. I have a dry-erase white board, that I use to teach 6 different sections of reading to. My students are easily amused, and love any and all strategies/techniques I bring to the classroom to make the learning more fun. However, they need something more that can assist them with their reading. They need technology.
I am hoping that with the utilization of the tablets in the classroom, I can hopefully give my students the chance to learn from various apps. The tablets can't replace ME, but they can enhance my teaching and their learning. I would love it if my kiddos had technology that is purposeful, and resourceful right at their fingertips.
