All students learn how to play the recorder in 3rd and 4th grade. This instrument is viewed as a "gateway" instrument in elementary music classes because it teaches all of the skills that are necessary to transition into a traditional band or orchestra instrument in middle school. My students enjoy playing their recorders but it is difficult for my students with disabilities to play. A traditional recorder is small and requires a lot of fine motor skills. Students have to be able to place their fingers over the holes and seal them perfectly in order for the instrument to make a sound. Because inclusion is a big part of success for students with disabilities, I want them to be able to fully participate in class and be successful. One of my teaching goals for this year is to find ways to help my students with disabilities feel successful in music class. The Nuvo recorders are ergonomically designed for students who do not have the mastery of fine motor skills and it comes with "keys" that students push to make the instrument sound. They are designed to look like traditional recorders to save the student from any embarrassment that might be experienced with having an instrument that does not look like the regular instruments and they sound just as beautiful if not better than traditional recorders. Additionally, these instruments barely need any breath support to sound, unlike the traditional recorders where it takes effort to blow into the instrument to produce a sound. Please help my students become more successful and inspire them to be the best musicians they can be so that their true being is noticed and not their disability.
