Writing is a key component in literacy. My 5th-grade class this year has demonstrated a great need in this literacy area. When compiling data it was clear there were discrepancies in both spelling and sentence structure. We began the Words Their Way curriculum to assist us in achieving the common core standard of L.5.2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. The letter tiles help students to move the letters around so they can see various patterns in words. The kinesthetic movement keeps them engaged longer with the process of learning. Through word work, the students will achieve a greater flow when writing, and also be able to implement a more advanced level of vocabulary when writing.
