"The bigger one applies a stronger force!" Not so fast, young physicist...My middle school students have a particularly difficult time grasping Newton's third law of motion, especially when it comes to describing collisions. Much of this trouble speaks to the newly emerging ability of students at the middle school level to think more abstractly. The use of dynamics carts will give students a much more concrete model of this law of motion.
Using the carts, students can create a collision system in which one cart is more massive than another. The steel bands will allow students to visualize the equally sized force pairs, as well as the direction of each force. Students will be able to set their own collision parameters and collect data on the resulting collisions. From their experience with the carts, students will begin designing solutions to an engineering problem involving collisions.
