Each year, our 3rd through 6th grade students spend two weeks learning how to play hockey. The population at our school has little to no prior knowledge of the game of hockey. The students look forward to this unit because it is new and different for them.
Having a unit like hockey is important for our students because it allows them to learn a sport that is not traditional to their culture. Any time we can open new learning for our students, we have succeeded in their growth. The game of hockey also allows our students to grow by developing a sense of team work throughout this unit.
