My student journalists are eager to begin writing and producing a brand-new school newspaper-- but we need paper!
A school newspaper can empower writers, inspire thinkers, and create readers. The students in my journalism class are ready to go! By creating a school newspaper, they're strengthening their own writing skills. They're also taking advantage of leadership opportunities; our journalism class is student-run. Students host their own meetings to assign articles, edit writing, and help one another schedule interviews.
Most importantly, however, my students are helping to create a genuine enthusiasm for reading at our school. Not only do they create interesting, relevant, and meaningful content, but they are giving all students the opportunity to see themselves in print. Through their writing, my students are empowering their peers to see themselves as writers and readers.
