Reading is an essential skill my Special Education students struggle with. They often think they are dumb because it's challenging for them. When the burden of decoding the text is lightened, their observations and insights about the story itself are intelligent, insightful and reflective.
"Yummy" will provide an equity-based reading experience for my entire Special Education class. The range of reading levels is wide, from 1st grade to 5th grade. "Yummy" will give all students equal access to the story because the comic book-like graphics, text, and relevance will support their comprehension and connection. Students will be equipped with the same knowledge of who the characters truly are without guessing about what they thought they understood through reading alone.
Being able to think more skillfully will allow conversations about this relatable story to happen between all students. Visualizing the buzz in the classroom from lively discussions about the main character and the choices he makes is exciting. Their writing skills will also be lifted because of their ability to think more deeply about the book due to their increased comprehension. The joy my students will feel when they experience how much more deeply they can think, speak and write about this novel is what I want most for them. Donations to this project will make this experience come alive for my wonderful students. They deserve it.
