When students enter my classroom, they immediately notice the difference! Following some impressive research about the efficacy of comfort in helping students focus and learn, I have tried to create a space that welcomes students and accommodates their various learning styles. I want my space to say, "You are welcome and valued here--now let's learn!" Over the course of the last year, I have added several different kinds of flexible seating options including bean bags, rocking chairs, floor cushions, pub stools, and office chairs. Some of these were purchased with a small grant, others I've paid for myself, shopping garage sales and thrift stores.
One lack we still have, however, is tall seating. I have three tall tables to accommodate students who like to stand or sit high, but the stools I was able to purchase are cheap and now falling apart. So we are in particular need of sturdy and comfortable stools. Additionally, I need a couple more office chairs, as I still have two students sitting in the inflexible plastic chairs purchased by the school.
