Within the last couple years, our school library/media center has undergone a much needed inventory and weeding process. Many books were old, ripped, contained outdated information, or were irrelevant. In fact, 1986 was the average age of our collection. The "new" and "popular" books that middle schoolers were asking for unfortunately were not on our shelves because our budget for a few years was nonexistent or very little. We are looking to expand our collection with high-interest, relevant, and diverse titles. While our district is now at the point of being able to provide our school library/media centers with a small budget, it still usually only allows for approximately 450 books per year. While it is a much appreciated start, it is not enough to bring our collection age and book per student ratio up enough to really be a 21st century library/media center.
