My students will use these materials to help support the learning they do during core lessons. We currently attach some kind of art to our Social Studies, Science, Social Emotional Learning, and Writing.
Currently, our students have access to crayons and markers but do not have access to other types of art supplies. We are a Title I-funded school and have a limited amount of funding. One way we will utilize the supplies will be for writing. We will read an informational text or a fictional story. After reading, students will write a prompt discussing the main idea, an example of a story would be Animals and their Habitats. Students will write a short paragraph discussing the main idea of the text. Once students have completed their final draft they will draw a coral reef to go along with their writing. They could use paint or pastel colors to bring their art piece to life.
Students have become excited about school since we've incorporated art to my lessons. They have not attended school since mid Kindergarten due to the pandemic, and really struggled to get used to school routines. I am hopeful that continuing to include art as part of our lessons will help promote learning.
