Many of the students I serve are challenged with not only low reading levels and limited English proficiency, but they are also challenged with lack of self-confidence and motivation. I often observe this during reading activities in which reading fluency is necessary. The smiles from their faces disappear when they are unable to read as fluently as their peers. This sometimes causes them to avoid full participation in learning activities. I often tell them that things will get better and that they will continue to learn.
They love activities that require them to solve problems and earn points. Those activities engage my students in the learning process and make them happy.
There is nothing that would make my students happier than to have the confidence of being proficient readers.
