Students need access to books - books chosen for the pure joy of reading. Books that are assigned by the teacher are often considered outdated, dull, and unrelatable to students. They often don't read them and they cover dust and crumbs in backpacks. However, choice reading is a GAME CHANGER. When students get to read anything of their choosing there is ownership, accountability, and most importantly, interest. Students need to develop a reading life so they can become citizens that are knowledgeable of the world. Reading also helps students to understand grammatical structures, build vocabulary, and establish empathy.
Our school library is closing. It is devastating, but our school does not have the funds or space to sustain the library; therefore, teachers are scrambling to add as many books to their classroom libraries as possible. Also, when students are in such close proximity to books, as they are when a classroom library is present (and with the right teacher support), they can't help but become readers.
