Our focus this year is reading books that are truly distinguished. We are exploring different authors and diverse literature to find the best and brightest books of the 2017 year! These books go on a cart that circulates through four 5th grade classrooms and services over 100 students.
Our students enter 5th grade as immature readers, who have little grasp of genre and authors, but they leave 5th grade as mature readers who can select great literature based on more than just a cover. Students explore authors, genre, plot devices, and themes on route to predicting the 2017 Newbery and Caldecott winners.
These books will help students have access to all the possible contenders and will help us expand the reading across all four classrooms. After the project is done, these books are not forgotten, but infused into classroom libraries for many future students to enjoy!
