I teach at a small, community-based Title I school in Oakland with a large immigrant population. Almost all of my students are newcomers -- they arrived to the United States in the last 1-3 years from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, and Yemen.Many students have limited schooling and literacy in their native language.
