Using Legos as manipulatives, my students will be able to take abstract math ideas and: make them real, touch them, and explore deeper. Next year my classes will be part of an academy that will place an emphasis on hands-on learning and real-world experiences. I am looking to bring in manipulatives that engage the students and inspire their creative spirits.
By their design, Legos are an excellent tool to teach or enhance instruction with: multiplication and divisions skills, fractions, equivalent fractions, and geometry skills. Legos will also give students another outlet to demonstrate acquired knowledge in Science. Legos would allow students a creative outlet to create models of what we are working on. They could build: a model of the ocean floor, an atom, a molecule, the layers of the earth, a flower with all of its parts, and a model of the solar system just to name a few.
About my class
