For the last month of school, my students and I want to do a book study. Through conversations and informed discussions, we have settled on "Because of Winn-Dixie". Exploring this book with my students will allow them to explore a neighborhood outside of their own, it will enable them to make connections with the characters, and rekindle the joy within reading. Through rigorous preparation for their state test, many of my kids have forgotten how thrilling reading can be and through reading "Because of Winn-Dixie", I hope to reignite their passion for literature. As a class, reading "Because of Winn-Dixie" will give my students ownership of their learning. Books are not just words on a page, rather they are places for my students to visit.
